Brazil began in Bahia. It was in Porto Seguro, in the southern part of the state, which today is Baía de Cabrália, that Pedro Álvares

Cabral arrived in search of a “safe harbor” (Porto Seguro) for the Portuguese ships. It was here the first mass was celebrated, which marked the arrival of the Portuguese in the country, in 1500. The first settlements emerged there and the first capital of Brazil was Salvador, which today has a rich culture known all over the world.

The history of Brazil is reflected in the Bahian buildings, which mark important moments in the country, in the black culture - which has the respect and honor it deserves in the state - and even in the local artistic traditions. One of the major and most popular tourist destinations in Brazil, it has world-class tourist facilities and its residents know how to welcome visitors who come here to enjoy the rich natural wonders, culture, gastronomy and religious tradition.

Bahia offers numerous beaches on a coast cut by forests and lagoons which make the landscape unforgettable. The mixture of wild and almost untouched beaches with good tourist facilities – from word-class luxurious resorts to simpler inns in a fishing village – makes the state an unforgettable place.

In the interior, ecological reserves attract those who seek adventure itineraries and eco-tourism, like Chapada Diamantina. Also in the interior, the wine tourism has been developing in Vale do Rio São Francisco, which until recently was considered an impossible achievement, since the dry tropical climate had never been suitable for the cultivation of vineyards. Today, the region already produces 15% of the Brazilian wine, after Vale dos Vinhedos, in the South, a traditional producer.
